A Safe Place Budget Cuts take toll in Services for Abused Women and Children - Here are the Facts:
Budget Cuts
In
1976, a group of women working on domestic violence issues in San
Francisco came together to address the urgent need for a shelter in
the East Bay. A year later, they founded A Safe Place in Oakland.
Powered solely by volunteers, they offered crisis counseling,
referrals and information services to battered women and their
children. Permanent staff were hired after funding from foundations,
individuals and corporations was secured.
In
1980, ASP was forced to find a new facility or close down. Thanks to
the media which helped publicize the crisis, an anonymous donor
enabled ASP to purchase its own shelter with the capacity to house
20 women and their children. Today, despite severe governmental
cutbacks, ASP continues to expand its programming and services to
battered women and their children in the East Bay.

Our mission at A Safe Place is to break the cycle of domestic and family violence
by providing battered women and their children with safe shelter and resources and to prevent violence through
outreach and education to at-risk populations.

A Safe Place
takes a holistic approach in fulfilling this mission by featuring
direct services, prevention and public policy advocacy on domestic
violence. As part of our commitment to preventing domestic
violence, the agency continues to build community awareness that
battering is widespread; alert the general public to the available
services and intervention that can help battered women; encourage
community responsibility for prevention; and increase awareness that
domestic violence is a human rights violation and is linked to other
forms of violence and oppression.
In line with our
philosophy of "Keeping the Family Together," ASP does accept male
children over the age of 12 years old. ASP is one of the very few
battered women programs, which will accept male children up to age
17. We believe in keeping the family unit together during this
critical period for the woman and her children.
